The NJEA Technology Committee: 1. studies the impact of technology on educational programs;
2. reviews technology curricula proposals and initiatives for
educational appropriateness;
3. reviews state-supported funding proposals and makes recommendations
for funding improvements to provide the equipment, personnel, programs,
and training necessary to institute all aspects of technology
education;
4. educates NJEA members, legislators, and policymakers about the
varied components of technology education;
5. recommends the types of programs needed in every school district to
ensure students become technologically literate;
6. develops and initiates training opportunities for school personnel.
Thanks to the guidance of our fearless leaders, Lou Balka, Jr. and Darryl Ensminger, this committee has worked hard to bring new technology to NJEA members. We helped to organize and man many technology related professional development opportunities throughout the state for our members and have many more planned.
For the convention this year, we expanded the size and scope of last year’s Technology Integration Showcase and introduced the new High Tech Hall. Whether you had a quick question or needed a complete tutorial, members were able to drop in to meet their colleagues from around the state and see how they are using the latest applications in their classrooms.
Joyce Powell draws the first winning ticket for the High Tech Hall Giveaway. We held 8 drawings for High Tech prizes: 2 Flip phones, 2 Ipods, 2 Dell Computers and 2 Smartboards that were all donated! Thank you to all of our vendors and sponsors!
NJEA and the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning were proud to offer the Technology Integration Showcase in High Tech Hall. There, NJEA members from every part of the state presented one-on-one demonstrations of technology activities tested in their own classrooms.
In Classroom 1, Verizon Thinkfinity featured hands-on demonstrations of how teachers are using Thinkfinity.org to enhance their instruction. Thinkfinity.org is the Verizon Foundation’s comprehensive program and online portal to more than 55,000 standards-based, grade-specific, K-12 lesson plans and other educational resources provided in partnership with many of the nation’s leading educational and literacy organizations.
In Classroom 2, Lisa Thumann, senior specialist in technology education from the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Computer Education (CMSCE) at Rutgers University, focused on integrating 21st-century technology into classroom instruction. The CMSCE 21st-Century Learning Initiative is designed to help students keep up with today’s challenging educational and technology needs. Ms. Thumann’s presentations were great for those who are looking for ways to integrate technology on a shoestring budget.
In addition, NJEA members who have successfully integrated technology into their everyday instruction presented their classroom-proven techniques.
